Christopher Marc Fettig

Christopher graduated from East Grand Forks Senior High School in 1982. During high school he was involved in the following activities: Football, Wrestling, Track, Student Council, Band, Choir, Pop Singers, National Honor Society, Children's Theater, One Act Play, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the Lead Role in three High School Musicals (The Pajama Game, Hello Dolly, and My Fair Lady). Honors he won include: 1982 All State Choir Member, 1982 Legion Boys State, Co-Captain of the 1982 Wrestling Team, 1982 MVP Wrestler, 1982 National School Choral Award Recipient, named Grand Forks Exchange Club Honor Athlete in 1982, and was Elks Club Student of the Month.

He attended Bemidji State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Music. He later received an M.A. Degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Illinois in 1993. During college he participated in Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Bass Section Leader, Madrigal Dinners, Opera Night, performed major roles in two Operas, and was active in Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. College Honors include: Graduated Summa Cum Laude, named Honorary Junior Usher for 1985 Commencement, and was awarded the Carl O. Thompson Scholarship as Outstanding Vocal Major.

After teaching one year in Benson, MN, he returned to Bemidji and has spent the last 25 years teaching vocal music at the senior high school. After receiving the Outstanding Young Vocal Director award from the American Choral Directors Association of Minnesota in 1991, he served two years as the Northwest District Chair. In 1999 he was named Teacher of the Year for ISD 31 and selected as one of eight Honor Roll Teachers in the MN Teacher of the Year Program. In 2000 he was elected Regional Representative of the MN Music Educators Association for region VII-VIII AA. In 2007 he was named Choral Director of the Year by the American Choral Directors Association of MN. He is currently serving as chairperson of the Bemidji High School Music Department.

Richard 'Dick' Grassel

A 1961 graduate of Central High School in East Grand Forks, Richard was a life long resident of East Grand Forks, Minnesota. He has the honor to serve on the East Grand Forks City Council from March 16, 1989 until February 28, 2011. He served as Council President from January 3, 2006 until February 28, 2011. He served on numerous Boards and Commissions, some of which include: Economic Development and Housing Authority, The Planning and Zoning Commission, MPO Executive Board, Parks and Recreation Committee, and the Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities. Richard loved East Grand Forks and wanted the city to be clean and respected. He played a leading role in helping the city recover from the Flood of 1997 and helped secure millions in State and Federal dollars to help rebuild the city.

Dave Hetland

Dave graduated from Senior High in 1968. While in high school he participated in 3 sports. In basketball, he led his team in assists as a junior. He was the leading scorer and rebounder as a senior on the 1968 State basketball team and set a school rebounding record. He also was named 1st Team All City, All Region 2, and received an All State Honorable Mention. In track, he was a member of the Region 8 championship team in 1967 and set a school record as a senior. He played 4 years of American Legion baseball and was later named head coach.

Dave attended three different colleges where he played basketball, amateur baseball, and was a member of the AES social society. After a brief stint for basic training in the National Guard, he transferred to UND and began coaching at Grand Forks Central. Dave received his Bachelor's Degree from UND in 1973 and his Master’s Degree from the University of St. Thomas in 1995. In his 35 years of teaching and coaching, he coached 5 different sports and was an Athletic Director. Although many of his teams won championships, he was best known for his cross-country teams, which qualified teams or individuals for state 24 years straight. In that time, there were 10 section championships and 11 runner-ups, 19 state top-8 finishes, and 3 state academic championships. He coached 67 All-Section 8 runners, 14 All-State runners, 8 State medal winners, and 1 individual State champion. Many of his runners went on to successful college careers.

Dave received The Scholastic Coaches magazine Gold Award in 1988 and the Minnesota 25-year coaches award in 1998. He was named Section/Region Coach of the Year 16 times. In 2002, he was named Minnesota Boy’s Class A Coach of the Year and was inducted into the Minnesota Cross Country Hall of Fame in 2003. He was also named to Who’s Who of America’s Teachers 4 times during his career.

Dave is a life member of the NEA, MN Coaches Association, EGF Boosters, and continues to teach Driver’s Education.

His family includes his wife Sue and daughters Shandi and Farrah.

Patricia A. Jacklitch

Bruce 'Buzz' Olson

A 1965 graduate of Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls, MN, during school he participated in Football, Hockey and Track. He was selected Team Captain in all three sports his Senior year. After high school he attended Bemidji State University where he earned a B.S. Degree in Physical Education and Health. While at BSU he played hockey for the Beavers and was part of the Bemidji State “B” Club, which was an Athletic Letterman’s Club. He played on National Championship Hockey teams in 1967 and 1968. He was an MCHT All Tournament Team Selection and was named to the ICHA All Conference Team. He was selected to the BSU Team Hall of Fame in 2004. After College, he started a 36 year career as a teacher and coach in East Grand Forks. He was Head Hockey Coach for 7 years, coached Football for 36 years and Track and Field for 27 years. He was a long time Official in Ice Hockey having officiated more than 1000 games in his career. Some of the Accolades he received include: 2005 EGF Chamber of Commerce Award for Dedication and Leadership of Youth in EGF, 2008 Distinguished Service Award from the MN State High School Coaches Association as a High School Hockey Official, 2011 Founders Award from the MN Hockey Officials Association, 2012 Distinguished Service Award from MSHSL for Dedicated Service to The Northwest Hockey Officials Association, 2012 Chet Stewart Award from the USA Hockey Officiating Education and Development Program which is the ultimate award presented by the USA Hockey Officiating Program.

John Roche

John graduated from St. James High School (Grand Forks) in 1956. While in school, he participated in many Athletics as well as Academic Clubs. He was named All City in both Football and Basketball. He attended the University of North Dakota, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Math and Teaching in 1960. He was a letter winner in Football during his time at UND and his 1958 Football Team was inducted into the UND Hall of Fame. He also received a Master’s degree in School Administration in 1964 and a Specialists degree in School Administration in 1971. He taught Math and Science at East Grand Forks Senior High from 1964-1968, was an Assistant Principal from 1968-1971, and Assistant to the Superintendent from 1971-1974. He became Assistant Superintendent of Schools in 1974 and held that position until becoming Superintendent of Schools in 1985 until his retirement in 1999. During his tenure as Superintendent, he oversaw the building of 3 new schools in the District and played a huge role in the rebuilding of East Grand Forks after the Flood of 1997.
